DSG - Direct Shift Gearbox

While the European market is mainly dominated by manual gearboxes, the preferred gearbox in the US and Japan is the automatic one. However, Volkswagen took the best of both worlds and created the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

The DSG meets the high standards of drivers of automatic and manual gearboxes such as:

Horsepower & Torque

• Torque affects the ability of a vehicle to accelerate, whether from a standing stop or while moving, as  in passing
• Horsepower helps determine the top speed of a vehicle in any given gear
• Horsepower and torque outputs of Volkswagen engines are designed to provide a combination of excellent acceleration, fuel economy, and reduced exhaust emissions
  

TDI Engine

The fundamental difference between a gasoline engine and a diesel engine is that a gasoline engine uses  a spark from a spark plug to ignite the fuel mixture in each cylinder, while a diesel engine relies on the compression of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber to start ignition.

Tiptronic
The 6-speed adaptive automatic transmission with Tiptronic allows drivers to easily switch between a fully automatic transmission and a manually shifted, but clutchless, gearbox.

Available on ALL Volkswagen Models.

Shift points are automatically regulated to provide three distinct operating characteristics:

• Comfort driving for maximum fuel economy (shift points are kept low)
• Average driving (shift points are raised slightly)
• High-performance driving (shift points are increased to allow the engine to rev higher between gearshifts)

Benefits:

• Adaptive, automatic shifting
• Manual shifting without operating a clutch
• Easy to choose between these two ways of shifting gears

Turbocharged Engines
Turbochargers or "turbos" are compressors run by the exhaust gas pressure of an engine. They compress and force incoming air into the combustion chambers or cylinders thereby improving the "breathing" of an engine. This improved breathing results in better efficiency, more power and improved emissions.

Available: on GTI, GLI, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Passat, CC, Eos and Tiguan.

4Motion
4motion is a full time all-wheel-drive system requiring no driver input. 4motion uses a Haldex coupling and Electronic Differential Locks (EDL) to automatically direct engine power to the wheel or wheels with the most traction.

4Motion operates full-time to maximize acceleration and control in all driving conditions. There are no special levers, buttons, or hub locks for the driver to operate.

Anti-lock Brake System
The Anti-lock Brake System, or ABS, is designed to help a driver maintain control of a vehicle during hard braking.

The ABS system responds to wheel lock-up during braking by alternately increasing and decreasing hydraulic pressure in the brake lines of the affected wheel or wheels.

ABS is standard on all Volkswagen models.

Volkswagen's ABS is a four channel system with a control module, and speed sensors at all four wheels. The hydraulic controls and ABS electronic control module are housed together as a single unit.
