Last month, we told you about how the people over at Adweek recognized the 2011 Volkswagen Passat Super Bowl ad as one of the best of the year. With that in mind, it shouldn't really come as a surprise to hear that Volkswagen recently announced that they've purchased a 60-second spot during the 2012 Super Bowl. And, while we think they're going to have a hard time beating last year's commercial, we're sure that whatever the ad team over at VW is working on will be pretty cool.

What makes us say that? Well, to start with, a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl costs an (estimated) $3 million. Also, the Super Bowl is one of the most watched television events, with over 100-million viewers last year, and rising steadily each year. After tiny Darth and the 2012 Passat debuted during the game, dealers logged more sales of the sedan than for the entire 2011 model year. And as of the beginning of 2012, more than 48-million people have viewed the spot on Youtube.

We don't know much else about the proposed ad, other than the star will be the 2012 Beetle, and it will air just before the third-quarter of Super Bowl XLVI, on February 5^th. That's right, this won't be the Beetle's first Super Bowl commercial, we caught a glimpse of it for the very first time last year. The only difference is that this time around, the 2012 Beetle isn't a secret anymore.

Tim Mahoney, Product and Marketing Boss for Volkswagen of America says that the company "Is excited to showcase the all-new 2012 Beetle on football's biggest stage. The Super Bowl is the perfect platform to feature the bold, dynamic, and sportiest Beetle ever made."¹
