There are a lot of things to love about the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The Passat also earned five stars in the front and side crash tests from NHTSA, and four stars for the rollover test. These ratings are part of NHTSA's more stringent testing standards that were implemented starting with the 2011 model year. This year, NHTSA plans to evaluate 74 vehicles for 2012, about 81% of the vehicles on the market. Of the models tested so far, only seven have earned five-star composite ratings.

What are the safety features that helped the Passat earn five stars? Well, antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and Intelligent Crash Response all come standard in the 2012 Passat. Intelligent Crash Response, in the event of an accident, cuts off the fuel supply, unlocks all the doors and turns on the hazard flashers. Pretty cool, right? Well, the NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) thought these were all impressive safety features, with the IIHS awarding the sedan with a top score of "Good" in their safety tests, as well.

Oh, and did we mention that along with its safety features, the Passat boasts an impressive 22 mpg city/25 mpg highway rating, keyless entry, full power accessories, climate control, Bluetooth, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, CD player and auxiliary audio input? Well now that we have, it's really no wonder that it's safety prowess, fun features and exceptional performance helped it earn Motor Trend's 2012 Car of the Year Award.
