Volkswagen Brings Back 'The Force'

Last month, we told you to watch out for the all-new Volkswagen Beetle during the Super Bowl this year. Leading up to the big game, VW released a teaser video called "The Bark Side," featuring a chorus of dogs barking out "The Imperial March." And then left us all wondering - how would they ever use the Star Wars theme and dogs? Even better - how could they possibly top last year's ad?
There are few things cuter than a kid with dreams of using "The Force." But the pudgy dog that dreams of chasing a new Beetle down the street might just have done it. When he first spies the shiny red Beetle, the dog realizes he's too fat to fit through the doggy door. What's a dog to do?
Go on a diet, obviously. We see him lifting weights, watching exercise videos, and even ignoring the scraps dropped from the dinner table. Before long, he spies the Beetle zipping down the street, and he's off! The voiceover proclaims (of the Beetle and the pooch) "Back. And better than ever."1 But then...what happened to Star Wars?
Cut to the Star Wars Cantina, where everybody's sitting around watching the ad. And one character shares with his friends, "The dog's better!"2 Of course, he changes his mind when Darth Vader uses the force to choke him. Even Volkswagen knows that their 2011 ad for the new Passat is hard to beat.
So then, we guess it's not really up to us to decide if Tiny Darth or the chubby canine is better, right? It seems that both have won over audiences - we'd be surprised if the new one didn't, as Volkswagen reportedly spent six months on the commercial and threw out at least 200 other ideas before settling on this one.
